What is the olympics for me?

Saturday, March 12th, 2005

OlympicflagWell, as many would say, it is the event that meets every corner of the globe in one place. It is the largest international event in the world. What what is so special about this event?

First, in everything that i watch, my ears are the most sensitive. You have to expect most from the music. It symbolizes "unity" of all people of various background from race, ethnicity, language, belief and citizenship. When the music ends, the feeling is always sad because it could either mean that the world have ended and being back to normal after an event, which is held only one month in a leap year, is like ending that unity, those hands holding, and those colours mixed together sending everyone back to their own native lands divided once again from each other.

Going off topic: that might be the reason why classical music is my most favourite genre of music…

well, i figured out how to manage time a bit after working in that lovely now nasty grocery store. that’s actually an unusual action i made because of ralph and his social science class. is the capitalist society like this? for people who would be reading this, try researching about capitalist society and tell me what are the greatest advantages of being part of it or of its function in this world.

Alchemist "The Alchemist"

Brazil: O Alquimista

Paolo Coelho (1988)

Original Language: Portuguese

Okay, i started reading on Paolo Coelho’s "The Alchemist". Its one of the most fav books of my friends back home in the Philippines. Its very promising i must say. it gives you not really a different but an improved perspective and philosophy about life or maybe an enlightenment. It absolutely says important things in the introduction where the Brazilian writer talks about the 4 obstacles in achieving your goals. I’m gonna be reading it further.

This is one of the neat things about blogs.

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." - King of Salem, The Alchemist

Very well translated i must say. The idea of the omens is really interesting as how it may be connected to your goals. I must do that myself as well. The characters are so far three dimensional and how they work in the story is absolutely intelligent. The best part in the novel so far is the one where the shepherd works with the crystal merchant. The character development, although logical, is well done. Both characters have goals in life… the shepherd wants to go to the Pyramids in Egypt to find his treasure, the merchant wants to go to Mecca to do his obligation to his faith. We see the crystal store (which is owned by the crystal merchant) as one of the few stores that is still open on Tangier. As the crystal store changes (has the tea shop and stuff), the two also change… the shepherd adjusts to the culture & language, the merchant happy with his business. Both of them were one step closer to their goals. The sad part is when the merchant couldn’t actually leave his place and go to Mecca. that outcome made me more curious about the shepherd’s decision to continue his… (i would rather give lesser plot points hehehehe)…

Books: what i read to learn more spanish?

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Well? I’ve got my coursebook in college, but i sure needed a better one.

Spangrammar

"Teach Yourself Spanish Grammar"
Juan Kattán-Ibarra

You wouldn’t believe how nice this book is. It’s straight forward! It gives all the key grammar points in every chapter. It makes your language study enjoyable. You won’t go astray with this book because you can find phrases and sentences that you could use in different situations not only by telling your name and age, but all kinds of communication in general. I absolutely recommend this book to those who are trying to learn spanish, but i’m afraid you need basic skills in this language. There’s another book of the same "Teach Yourself" series that could be supplements for beginners, i suggest you take that first.

Film: Operation Condor

Operationcondor"Operation Condor"

Hong Kong: Fei Yin Gai Wak

Director: Jackie Chan (1990)

Original Language: Chinese

Starring:
Jackie Chan, Carol Cheng, Eva Cobo, Shôko Ikeda

WOOHOO! nothing better than old Jackie Chan films. Not gonna critique this film… but i’m kinda reminiscing my experiences when i was watching this. its hilarious nonetheless, but seeing Dragon of *something* made me a little bit upset cause originality was absolutely out of the question. *having a headache now*. i was devastated with this film no doubt. But you know what? i see this film better than the other. Got introduced with Jackie as a sort of Indiana Jones guy, only thing is that taking the *jewel whatever that is* consequently leads Jackie to being chased by these tribal mongrels. hehehe… i just couldn’t forget how this film have put an impression to Jackie Chan as an adventurer rather than just merely a stuntman.

hehehe… more to come…

Books: Memoirs of a Geisha

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

Memgeisha"Memoirs of a Geisha"

Arthur Golden (1997)

WHOA!!! Am I seeing what I am seeing? This novel is going to become a film this year! It stars Zhang Ziyi and Ken Watanabe. Get info in imdb.com.

This actually means that i have to read this book very soon. Reading the introduction already put me in the mood of reading it but i just couldn’t believe that i gave up on that book. I was really intrigued with the lives of geishas in Japan, and absolutely, seeing it on TV made me flip through this book.

The story is all about the life of Sayuri from her childhood in a house by the sea growing up from to become a geisha. Golden already put me in the imagining state as he describes the setting which was the part i read before giving up.

I’d say good job to the person who made the cover. Absolutely extravagant photography!

Rest!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

Geez, studying is really giving me a headache!

Anyways, its better to rest in between studying because you will never remember anything if you do not rest… the professor who told me that really convinced me. i was able to absorb knowledge more effectively… but always put in mind! you are not resting and suddenly playing, you have to always keep yourself reminded that you are still studying…

well blogwatchers! i think i’m going to take about 10 more minutes before going back to my studies but not sticking around here… hehehe

¡Chao!

first in-class test after reading week

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

well, there i go tomorrow… 3 straight hours of classes followed by humanities mid-term… its absolutely wild, but i have to do it!

have been studying beside japanese students in the library who does nothing but eat and chat… hehehe they’ve been told by the librarian to keep their food away but they continued eating… oh well that’s ok for me i guess as long as they don’t piss off the librarian that they would choose the option of opening our bags for food before coming in the library.

oh yes! had my spanish class today… there is a difference between telling your date of birth in tagalog-spanish, and how you say it in spanish…
Tagalog: Ang kaarawan ko ay sa ika 22 ng Pebrero.
Spanish-Tagalog: Ang kaarawan ko ay sa Pebrero a 22.
Spanish: Mi compleaños es el 22 de Febrero de (your year of birth here)

Other than that, i also learned that the spanish week in their calendar actually starts from monday… Lunes!

plenty of stuff to learn… when time comes, i’m gonna be writing half-spanish, half-tagalog & half-english…

anyways… ¡Chao!

Board1Go, pretty much an unusual game for many in the western world. I’m afraid its the same way as the Philippines who’s much more oriented on chess, checkers/dama, game of the generals, monopoly and scrabble more than any other board game.

Since board games is one of my hobbies, i really wanted to share this game to everyone who wishes to get introduced to a new board game.

I have a URL that will help people out from the basics, to the strategies, to the history of the game itself. Its just a shame that it was already introduced in the Philippines, but no one really took their time to play it.

Anyways, i’ve been just blabbering… the URL is http://senseis.xmp.net
